    Community association management is a dynamic profession with frequently changing laws, issues, and technologies. To ensure credentialed managers can provide the most up to date service, CAMICB requires certified managers to complete 16 hours of continuing education every two years.​​ 

    Education can consist of opportunities​ from webinars to courses to conferences, many of which are already approved and available on the List of Approved Continuing Education​. CAMICB randomly audits recertification applications. Managers selected for audit will required to show documented proof of completion of continuing education courses. This includes courses offered on demand or at no cost. CAMICB encourages managers to retain documented proof of completion of continuing education for four years after course completion. CMCAs are responsible for monitoring continuing education status and maintaining the necessary records to substantiate satisfactory compliance with the recertification program.  Download the convenient continuing education tracking form that will assist you in tracking your continuing education. Remember to keep a copy of this handy and fill it out throughout the year as you attend or participate in continuing education programs.

    Any individual who meets the continuing education requirements to maintain the below credentials will satisfy the current CAMICB continuing education requirement:

    • CAI's Association Management Specialist (AMS)
    • CAI's Professional Community Association Manager (PCAM)
    • National Association of Housing Cooperative's (NAHC) Registered Cooperative Manager (RCM) designation
    • Florida's Community Association Manager license (CAM)
    • Nevada's Community Association Manager certificate

    Credit Specifications

    • Credit hours may be earned only for education that meets either of the following criteria:
    • It pertains to community association operations or management
    • It contributes to the professional development of the CMCA
    • Educational courses are offered by approved course providers.
    • One half of the continuing education credits may be obtained through in-house training courses. These courses must be pre-approved by the Continuing Education Review Committee.
    • Local law seminars and local college or university courses pertaining to accounting, business practices, computers, or foreign language will count toward the continuing education requirement.
    • Courses related to buying and selling real estate are not acceptable.
    • Self-study credit must be pre-approved by CAMICB and is limited to no more than four hours every two years.
    • Teaching a course related to community association management can qualify for credit.
    • Publishing an article in a regional or national community association publication may qualify for credit.
    • One hour of credit equals one hour attended.
    • Credit for a course may only be submitted one time per recertification cycle.
    • Online learning must be interactive.  Interactive coursework is defined as requiring proof of participation.

    Coursework Specifications

    To assist managers in finding appropriate continuing education opportunities for their individual professional development, CAMICB has a wide variety of options for managers to find and complete their hours. The avenues to obtain continuing education include: ​​

    Pre-Approved Continuing Education

    The CAMICB Continuing Education Review Committee constantly reviews continuing education courses and providers to approve for managers to obtain qualified education. Managers can find all the current approved education in the List of Approved Continuing Education​. Each course is approved for 2 years.

    In-House Training

    Community association management company in-house training material can be used for CMCA
    continuing education, however it must be submitted to info@camicb.org to be reviewed and approved by CAMICB.
    Only one half or eight (8) continuing education credits through approved in-house training courses can be used per Recertification cycle.

    Submitted Continuing Education for Approval

    A manager may seek approval from CAMICB for a course or event not provided by a pre-approved course provider. All unapproved coursework must be submitted to info@camicb.org for approval prior to be used for Recertification.  CAMICB staff will then review submitted materials to determine eligibility for credit hours. ***CAMICB cannot approve coursework relating to the selling or buying of real estate

    State Approved Continuing Education

    Coursework approved by a state regulatory agency for manager licensing requirements will be automatically approved for CMCA recertification continuing education credit.  These states currently include: Colorado, Florida, Nevada, and Virginia.

    CMCA Prerequisite Coursework

    CMCA prerequisite coursework is also approved for continuing education.  Managers may not use the coursework to meet both examination eligibility and continuing education requirements.  For example, if a manager used CAI’s M-100: The Essentials of Community Association Management as their prerequisite education to sit for the CMCA examination, they may not submit it for CMCA recertification continuing education credit

    Authorship credit
    Managers can earn continuing education for articles they have written for regional or national community association publication. A copy of the published work must be submitted to CAMICB for approval to use as continuing education. Hours will be awarded based on the following:

    • 500–1,000-word article: 2 hours
    • 1,001–1,500-word article: 3 hours
    • 1,500+: 4 hours
    • Book or journal: up to 10 hours based on individual analysis

    Teaching Credit
    Managers who teach a course relating the community association management can earn continuing education credit for the CMCA. For each hour the course is taught the first time, a manager can receive two credit hours. Each time the course is taught after that, one hour of instruction will equal one credit hour. 

    Volunteer Service Credit
    Hours may be earned for volunteer service to organizations whose mission pertains to advancing community associations or the management profession. Credit hours may also be granted for advocacy work to support community associations and management professionals, such as providing official testimony or analysis on legislation or regulation (lobbying is not included) or other volunteer activities concerning the operations of a community association, such as the voluntary service on a board of a community association. Credential holders cannot receive compensation for any activities for which they request credits.

    CAMICB must approve the organization and service hours before a credential holder submits their recertification application.

    The maximum total hours allowed for volunteer service during the two-year recertification cycle is 8 hours.

    The following service activities can be counted towards continuing education hours:

    • National/International Organization Board: 8 hours
    • State Organization/Chapter Board: 4 hours
    • Organization Committee: 4 hours
    • Certification Exam Development: 8 hours
    • Advocacy Work: 4 hours
    • HOA/Condo Board: 4 hours

    Credential holders must provide objective evidence of their participation to receive continuing education credit for volunteer service. This evidence should be specific and verifiable, demonstrating that they met the activity’s requirements.
